Juan Carlos Obando‘s work is defined by the powerful use of color and an unassuming approach to evening wear. A former Art Director of advertising powerhouses such as Saatchi & Saatchi and Young & Rubicam, he started showing his collections in New York City after a private audience with Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. Juan Carlos has played an important role in reinvigorating the concept of modern American eveningwear recently being awarded as a first runner up on the 10th Anniversary of the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
I love your Spring 2015 collection, what was the inspiration?
So happy you love it! Its a very special collection, I was heavily inspired by the landscapes of the Guajira Region in Colombia. The color palette and the way woman carry themselves heavily influenced this collection. There is a certain mystery on how the desert there simply clashes with the ocean and the sky, the colors that come out of that equation are truly moving.
What is your favorite piece in the new collection?
I have to say I really love the all nude ensemble with bralette, skirt, and nude robe. It really became the look that captured the mood I envisioned for the collection.
What are the 3 things that will instantly update a woman’s wardrobe for Spring?
A great pair of tapered cropped white denim, a floral shirt, and a flowy maxi skirt.
What should a woman splurge and save on this season?
Always splurge on a good pair of summer sandals, you can dress them up or down. Save on anything that’s overtly structured.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced or overcome in the fashion industry?
At first, living in Los Angeles was a big challenge as New York is the ultimate fashion hub in the United States. Slowly and surely, Los Angeles has evolved and become a new hub and fashion is now becoming more driven and accepted. We do travel a lot to New York to meet editors and we’ve moved to presenting the collection in Paris which escalates our travel. The challenges with travel has also made us look at the industry from an unorthodox angle and ultimately has given our voice a very unique tone.
Where do you live and what are some of your neighborhood faves?
I live in sunny Los Angeles in the Silverlake area. We have some super incredible restaurants such as Alimento, Little Doms, as well as great LA shops like Mollusk Surf Shop and Mohawk General Store, all within a couple of streets of where I live.
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
Movies… Movies… Movies…
What is your guilty pleasure?
Haribo Gummy Bears! Lots of them.
You had a huge success with CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund x J.Crew … what is next for the brand?
We are very excited to launch two new ventures next season: knitwear and our first e-commerce site. Also super excited to launch the next collection in Mexico City later this Spring!
