Jimmy Coco is hailed as Hollywood’s tan authority by leading fashion and beauty magazines and world renowned tanner to the stars with such clients as Victoria Beckham, Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian and the Victoria Secret models. We asked him to reveal his secret for the perfect sunless tan to get us beach and beyond ready.
How did you get into the business of spray tanning and how did you come up with the idea of “mobile tanning”?
In my 20′s, I used to model swimwear and underwear. I would lay out in the sun to help hide the (port wine stain) birthmark on my chest. I decided to be a customer-service oriented mobile tanning business so I could possibly help other people with similar body issues. I never intended to pioneer mobile tanning or become famous for this.
Are there any self tanning products that you would recommend that also have high SPF content?
What are your top three (drugstore) Sunless Tanning products?
Jergens Daily Gradual Tanning Lotion, L’Oreal Sublime Tanning Lotion and Neutrogena build-a-tan gradual tanner for face with SPF 15. My absolute favorite sunless tanning pick for this year is the VS Beach Sexy tanning and bronzing line. The self-tanning tinted lotion is awesome because it is formulated with pure avocado oil, so it moisturizes your skin as it goes on. We all know that hydrated skin keeps a glowing tan longer.
What makes your products different from other sunless tanning products out there in the market?
My product is great for all skin types, parabens free, and easy to use spray so you can reach your back.
How do you get instantly thinner looking and minimize cellulite with spray tanning?
A darker application on the outer hips/thighs creates a slimming illusion.
Is spray tanning exclusive to lighter skins and how do darker women can benefit from it?
Darker women also have uneven skin-tones. Often times, tanning the lighter areas of your skin to match your darker areas of skin creates a “more all-over even” glow. All women want longer leaner look and by applying darker application on the outer hips/thighs area, it creates a slimming illusion.
In your professional opinion – what is the absolute best way to apply self-tanner when you’re doing it yourself. What tools does one need in order to achieve this?
Start with a daily gradual tanning lotion like Jergens. Using your hands, apply the lotion to the lighter areas of your skin in an effort to match your darker skin – this may take a few days or so to achieve the look you want (apply a light layer each day). Once that has been achieved, apply a light tanning spray mist over your entire body and remember, less is more. I recommend my product, Blast Tanning Spray.
